IEC 62561 Series — Lightning Protection System Components

The IEC 62561 series addresses lightning-protection system components. It is relevant to clamps, connectors, conductors, earth electrodes, isolating interfaces and other LPS hardware, depending on the specific part.

SN Engineering use: This is an original engineering summary for project understanding. It does not reproduce the purchased standard. Final design must use the applicable official standard edition, project specification and authority requirements.

Why this series matters

A compliant design is not only geometry. Connection components, conductors, earth electrodes and other LPS components must be suitable for the electrical, mechanical, corrosion and environmental duties of the installed system.

Connection components

IEC 62561-1 covers requirements and tests for metallic connection components such as connectors, clamps, bonding/bridging components, expansion pieces and test joints.

Conductors and earth electrodes

IEC 62561-2 covers metallic conductors and earth electrodes used in lightning-protection systems. Material, dimensions and performance must match the selected component/system requirements.

Electrically insulated LPS components

IEC 62561-8:2026 covers components such as insulating stand-offs and insulating down conductors for electrically insulated LPS arrangements.

Project Implementation Checklist

For an actual project, record the applicable standard edition, risk-assessment assumptions, approved drawings, selected design method, calculation revision, component specification, inspection/testing requirements and final engineering approval.
