Scope in the project
IS 3043 provides guidance on earthing electrical installations. It should not be collapsed into a single “earth resistance” target without considering the purpose of the earthing system.
Relationship to lightning protection
Lightning earth termination must be coordinated with the building earthing and bonding concept. The lightning-protection design still uses the applicable IEC/IS lightning standard for LPS geometry and lightning-current effects.
Current status note
IS 3043:2018 is the published second revision. BIS issued a 2025 wide-circulation draft for revision; project documents should verify which published edition is contractually applicable.
Engineering Reference Table
| Earthing function | Examples |
|---|---|
| Protective earthing | Equipment exposed conductive parts. |
| Equipotential bonding | Reduce hazardous touch/step potential differences. |
| System earthing | Reference current-carrying system conductors to earth. |
| Lightning earth termination | Disperse lightning current as part of the LPS. |
Project Implementation Checklist
For an actual project, record the applicable standard edition, risk-assessment assumptions, approved drawings, selected design method, calculation revision, component specification, inspection/testing requirements and final engineering approval.
